Isolate ILB Demario Davis

Isolate ILB Demario Davis

Demario Davis was a pick under the Rex Ryan regime in New York. Linebacker Davis was drafted in the 3rd round, but had a 5th round draft grade. Mayock was impressed with this guys speed and athleticism. He’s 6’2 and 240 pounds and ran in the 4.5s coming out of college. He has 46 tackles so far this season with 2 passes defended and 1 fumble recovery. Pro football focus (PFF) has Davis rated a 47 overall which is 66th at the ILB position and has never rated higher than a 36 overall versus the run at any point this year. The problem is scheming to attack him; the front 4 players of the Jets occupy soo many blockers that getting to Davis can be tricky.

The Raiders schemed very well to get to Davis. In the Raiders game Davis missed four tackles and had one of the worst games against the run game this year. Davis is ranked 8th worst at the ILB position in missed tackles and is rated 11th worse in the league against the run (PFF). The Jets use him at ILB and OLB in certain situations, so the Bills need to find the personnel match-up that gets him 1 on 1 with our speed players. Davis can cover numbers to numbers but his problem is once he gets to that spot he has trouble breaking down and making the tackle. The Raiders film shows that, Taiwan Smith and Latavius Murray both speed backs made Davis miss and look silly on several occasions. That was one of his weaknesses coming out of college, according to Mike Mayock he will have trouble “against one-cut runners at the NFL level, he could have a tough time gathering to make a secure tackle on the run.” This is still pretty evident and I think the Bills can have some success in the run game if they attack the edges with Shady and Karlos and cut back against the grain that could lead to Davis overpursuing. Take a look at what the Bills can expose:

11 personnel Trips left. Power counter right. Pull by the LG and TE. LB Davis gets to the hole but can't break down and make the tackle. Smith with a sick cut.

11 personnel, defense in the 3-4. Motion by the TE shows man coverage. The Raiders then isolate Davis with a swing pass to Smith. Davis misses the open field tackle.

12 personnel vs 3-4 defense. Inside zone with built in cutback. Attacking down hill gets the ILBs downhill, and gives the lineman the angles to engage the front 7. Davis fills front side A gap so Murry cuts it back to backside A gap. 3-4 defense is a 2 gap scheme so the defensive line has to fill 2 gaps. This play is a play in the Bills arsenal, expect to see it.

Unbalanced line, defense in the 3-4. Davis is in the hole, gets cut down by the pulling center. That opens up the hole for Murray and a big gain.

11 personnel, power counter vs. Nickel defense. David Harris takes on the pulling guard and Davis vs the TE. Davis wins the match-up but can't make the tackle.

As you can see the Raiders had success versus Davis and the ILBs as a whole. The Jets play a similar defense to the Bills and teams often attack the interior 2nd level of our defenses. The Bills need to be the aggressor, they need to use outside zone and inside zones with the misdirection. Make it appear that we are running right at the interior of the defense but then cut it back. That will bring the LBs up and allow our line to get hands on them as our speed backs shoot out the back door. This is just one interesting match-up that will be schemed for in this week 10 meeting between the Bills and the Jets. I can’t wait!!!!
