Rookie Power-Karlos Williams

Rookie Power- Karlos Williams

During the 2015 draft the Bills GM Doug Whaley took some heat for drafting 3 Florida State Seminoles. Ronald Darby, Karlos Williams and Nick O’leary. Darby and Karlos have played some great football for this Rex Ryan led team. When Karlos was drafted most thought that he would be a practice squad player or a contributor on special teams. Not many thought he would contribute as much as he has. Whaley also brought in Lesean Mccoy a playmaker at running back. As good as Shady is he is more of a zone runner, preferably with no fullback. The Bills also had Fred Jackson, a rock, a leader and the ultimate pro. The 3rd RB going into the season was Anthony Dixon, he was familiar with Roman’s system and already a key contributor on special teams. Bills fans including myself never thought Karlos had a chance to be the #2 RB and/or log as many snaps as he has (except my buddy Gabe Sirianni) . Well, he has definitely earned his keep. Specifically, in the Roman/Ryan power run game. Williams is the perfect complement to Shady for that reason. Shady isn’t the most patient RB, and he struggled early on in the season running with a FB or a pulling guard. This is where Karlos excels, he is a more patient runner, a typical one cut and go type back. He is patient, sets up his blocks and gets up field. But he does it very smoothly, which is surprising because he is 6’1 230 pounds. He has dealt with a concussion issue the last few weeks but makes his return vs. a team that he had a breakout game against. It’s almost the perfect game for him to return because this is the game that we need to be more physical and overpower the Dolphins under new coach Dan Campbell. So lets take a quick look at the touchdown Williams had in week 3 that sealed the deal versus the Fins.

Situation:

2nd and 7

Left hash, Dolphins 41yd line

4th Quarter 7:38

Score: Buf 34-14

EJ Manuel in the game. 21 personnel. Bills motion Woods into a tight alignment. Bills trying to run the clock out. Formation and personnel show run. But you must be able to run the ball even if the defense expects it. Execution, execution!!!

Fins are in a base 4-3 defense. Urbik is in the game at RG for Miller. Suh is lined up in the playside B gap.

The power run game starts with a double team at the point of attack. This is perfectly executed by Urbik and Henderson on one of the best DTs in the game Suh. Once Urbik gets control of the DT, Henderson is supposed to climb to the backside LB which he did very well. TE Marquise Gray is supposed to kick out the LDE, but the DE slants across the face of Gray which could have totally blown the play up. But Gray handles himself very well, he engages and rides the DE down the line of scrimmage. He took him where he wanted to go while staying engaged which gave Karlos a chance to see the field. FB Felton kicks out first man outside the TE which ended up being FS Thomas. WR Woods gets into the mix with Felton to secure the edge.

Ej carries out the zone read to hold the backside DE. Henderson walls off his defender. Richie approaching the LB Sheppard, the block that really leads to the big play. Sheppard is one of the worst run defenders in the league according to Profootballfocus, he is rated a 27.3 versus the run and a 32 overall. A+ for Marquise Gray!! SS Jones attacks the gap....

Hogan stalk blocking backside WR. Karlos has a clean hole, cuts back against the grain and accelerates. SS Jones takes the wrong angle and under estimates the speed of Karlos.

SS Jones, LB Misi and the playside CB Grimes have no shot of catching the rook! Off to the races.

This power run play was perfectly executed. Karlos almost gets eaten up by the turf monster at the 10 lol.

Greg Roman and this offense was on their game in week 3. Karlos Williams led the Bills in rushing with 12 carries for 110 yds and 1 TD. Most of his runs came on the power run play. The Bills controlled the line of scrimmage which was a pleasant surprise. I have been pretty critical of this offensive line especially the right side, but Urbik and Henderson played pretty well versus some very good DL talent of the Dolphins. RG Miller is expected back today so I expect the Bills to try and control the LOS and pound the rock with Shady and the rookie Williams in this game.
