The Good and Bad from the Cowboys Game

A mixed bag of good and bad plays versus the Cowboys

The Bills run mirror deep routes. The TE and FB chip then run flat routes. The WRs run deep comeback routes. The defense is in cover 3 and although the defense blitzed, Taylor is able to complete the pass to Sammy. The Bills run mirror deep routes. The TE and FB chip then run flat routes. The Bills fake a jet sweep to Sammy Watkins. His defender runs into #55 Mcclain and gives Gillislee just enough to get the edge. Gillislee puts a great move on the LB to get up-field. Right tackle Jordan Mills executes a nice cut block on the defensive end, that gives Taylor the opportunity to throw the swing to Gillislee. The Bills fake a jet sweep to Sammy Watkins. The Bills run an lead iso out of 11 personnel. Karlos bounces the play outside because ILB Mcclain shoots the gap. The weak-side LB does not maintain his gap integrity. Instead of covering his B gap he slides left and takes himself totally out of position. The Bills run an lead iso out of 11 personnel. This defense can be really good if guys would play disciplined football and take the proper angles on plays. It appears that the Bills are in a variation of the 3-4 under. This play is defended really well, but Graham takes the improper angle to the runner. He is the red arrow off of the screen. The runner gets outside and gets positive yardage. Should a hold have been called on Hughes? Probably, his body was turned by the Tackle.... This defense can be really good if guys would play disciplined football and take the proper angles on plays. Trips right formation Hogan runs a sail/corner route, Lewis runs the out and Sammy runs an arrow route. This route combination is a common cover 3 beater. The corner is in a bind, does he cover the deep out or the deep corner route? He chooses the deep out and expects the safety to help with the corner. Tyrod for some reason feels pressured and decides to pull it down and run. But if he steps up in the pocket I believe he may have a play to the sail route. But he plays it safe. Gillislee has been a very good back for us the last few weeks. Besides the good run blocking, I believe that he gets lost behind our offensive lineman. He is very difficult to track especially when the Bills run this concept.

Watch #50 LB Lee, he’s reading the FB. That is why the Split zone concept works. When the LBs begin to key on the FBs direction as being the direction that the play is flowing, teams run the split zone. The FB crosses the formation to block, Lee flows in the same direction. That takes him out of the play. Gillislee runs in the opposite direction but the play has a built in cutback. The offensive line blocks zone to their right, Gillislee gets a decent gain.

I like Rambo but not in man coverage in the slot...Graham and Rambo (9 TDs against combined), they are decent near the LOS not in man coverage. That is why we miss Aaron Williams, his leadership, intelligence and versatility. IMO the Bills must draft an athletic safety that has the range, cover skills and ability to tackle well..It will drastically help in base defense when teams want to target their TE, and it'll help when we play vs 4-5 wide offenses. Cowboys show middle of the field open, but post snap they drop to Cover 3 sky. That is when one of the safeties drops underneath to cover the flats to the top of the screen. TT wants to get the ball to Sammy but doesn’t recognize that the LB covering the flats is going to undercut him. The problem here is the the RDE grabs and throws the #2 WR in the progression. The TE tries chipping then getting to the flats but he gets taken out of the play, so TT doesn’t have an outlet to throw to on that side. By the time he gets to possibly dump it to the RB, it is too late.

Bills are in 3rd and long. Defensive backs look to be in a cover 4 alignment. But at the snap, the safety robs the middle of the field right at the 1st down marker. Making it cover 3. The drop by LB Mcclain into the hole towards the trips formation takes away the primary read Sammy Watkins. Rather than dump it to the RB, TT decides to try and make a play so he scrambles left and delivers a pass to Sammy. Bills are in 3rd and long. Defensive backs look to be in a cover 4 alignment. Another outside throw vs. Cover 3. Its crazy how little the flats defenders are playing their zones, they aren’t even jumping the delayed flat routes. The TEs chip and release, once the flat defenders see that, they know that TT is trying to go deep. So they weren’t flying to their assigned zone. TT was able to put the ball over the defender several times.

The Bills bring in the extra lineman, FB Felton and Gragg. This was a strong run formation. To counter the power sweep, the Cowboys had been overloading the strong side by bringing SS Church #42 into the box. The motion shows Taylor that it is zone. Taylor notices the weak-side LBs alignment (Flat defender), in conjunction with the MLB, SAM LB and the SS all being in the box. Single high safety, so most likely cover 3. Four defenders underneath and three deep= cover 3. The defense showed that and Tyrod recognized it. Tyrod stares the single high safety down, holding him to the middle of the field, and he delivers a great strike right over the flat defender.

The Bills are in 11 personnel and they run a weak-side counter. Wood gets away with a possible hold and Glenn doesn’t quite get to the edge. But that doesn’t stop Karlos from running over a couple Cowboys en route to the first down.

The Bills are in a 3-2-6 defense. They blitz Butler and Robey off the edge. Graham is man on man versus the #1 WR. He bites on the double move and allows the deep pass. Pretty throw by Kellen Moore.
