Week 14 Disappointments

Two Bills players made Pro Football Focus’ worst of the week column

The Bills couldn’t get by the Eagles in week 14. The big story surrounding the game was the return of Shady Mccoy to Philadelphia. Well, leaving Philadelphia it was quite a different story. The Bills will more than likely miss out on the playoffs for the 16th consecutive year. Reason? Inconsistency, one week the offense can’t produce enough points to win. The next week the defense can’t get a stop, it seems like every week there is another problem that needs to be addressed. This week was no different.

Week 14 could be classified as the week of penalties and shoddy offensive line play. Richie Incognito struggled versus a top 5 interior defender in Fletcher Cox. He had two big penalties in the game. But a player that has personally disappointed me this season is right guard John Miller. I had high hopes for this rookie guard, I thought this system fit him perfectly. But as Pro Football Focus’ (PFF) week 14 grading of Miller confirms, he has been an all around disappointment.

All year Miller has struggled, he has been holding down the #1 worst rated guard in the league. Most of his struggles have been in the pass protection phase, he is currently the 3rd worse rated pass blocker in the league. He gave up 1 QB hit and 5 QB hurries against a strong interior unit of the Eagles.  But what really put him on the week 14 list of worst players at their position, was his run blocking. According to PFF, he “allowed a couple of big run stops, a ton of disruptive plays and took two holding penalties”. Bills fans wonder why Shady was held to 11 yards on 8 carries in the second half, his play was part of it…But here is an example of him being out muscled.

Miller gets man-handled by Bennie Logan on this power run play. He has been disappointing and I think should be benched. Urbik has played in 402 snaps- He has allowed 0 sacks, 1 hit, 9 QB hurries and 3 penalties . Miller played in 491 snaps, allowed 2 sacks, 4 QB hits, 21 QB hurries and 5 penalties .

The other player from the Bills that made the list was ILB Preston Brown. According to PFF, Brown graded at a -7.8 overall because he was a non factor in the run defense. He finished the game with 4 tackles, 1 assist and only 1 stop. Part of that was the game-plan employed. The Bills kept their nickel LBs in the A gaps to stop the inside zone play. The inside zone play is the go-to run play. That zone run concept sets up the whole Chip Kelly offense. So they put Brown and Lawson up the middle to occupy the center, who because of the LB alignment would be unable to work a double team. Take a look:

It is no secret, that this team has struggled on both sides of the ball this season. Both of these players have been struggling at their respective positions. Miller is going to need a very strong offseason to remain a starter in this league. He needs to hit the weight room and hone his technique. Brown is a player that has struggled in this scheme. Taking on and shedding blockers isn’t his strong suit. These next few games will be critical to both of their careers.
