According to Profootballtalk.com, Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson will most likely be Franchise tagged by the team. February 16th is the first day that teams can tag players. Wilkerson has had a stellar career since coming into the league since 2011. If you compare his statistics to some of the highest paid defensive ends you can bet Wilkerson is going to hit the jackpot very soon. Take a look where he ranks versus some of the highest paid DEs in the league. The following players received their contracts extensions in 2015.
Eventhough Wilkerson broke his leg late in 2015, his resume precedes himself. In 2015 Wilkerson had the 2nd most total pressures with 78 behind J.J. Watt (per Pro Football Focus). Watt is due to make $14.5 million dollars in 2016.
The Jets will definitely take some time to ponder what to do long term with Muhammad. Having invested a 1st round pick on Leonard Williams and one year left on Sheldon Richardson’s contract the Jets may just move on from the veteran. Currently Spotrac has the Jets projected to be $9.5 million under the cap. Franchising Wilkerson will probably cost the team $15 million for one year.
