The Bills injury bug has spread across several positions including the Tight End position. Charles Clay who was been sidelined by an ankle injury along with free agent Jim Dray (undisclosed reason) sat out the scrimmage Saturday at St. John Fisher College.
The team was forced to make a few moves in order to get enough guys prepped for their first pre-season game August 13th against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Bills went out and signed Jimmay Mundine, a 6’2″, 240-pound player whose game seems to resemble Charles Clay.
Mundine played ball at Kansas where he is the school’s all-time Touchdown’s leader (11) for a Tight End. In his final season in 2014, he set the single-season record for a tight end by compiling 584 receiving yards while leading the team in receptions with 45. He was most recently on the Patriots practice squad.
Although he doesn’t have the typical tight end height, he may fit the Greg Roman scheme as more of an H-back. A player that Roman could use as a tight end or a fullback who from time to time catches passes out of the backfield. When the ball is in his hands, he has some good feet and YAC potential.

As we all know Bills fullback Jerome Felton struggled run blocking at times last year, but he also didn’t add much in the receiving department. Greg Roman likes to incorporate his fullbacks into the passing game. Bruce Miller had 67 catches while in Roman’s system from 2011-2014 (Pro Football Focus).

In 2015, Jerome Felton only caught one pass. Not utilizing the fullback in the passing game allows the defense to in essence not cover a player. The Bills must improve in that department .

I believe that the fullback/H-back position will be utilized much more this season. Adding a player like Mundine, whom they could use as an off-line tight end or align as a fullback adds more competition to the H-back type players like Blake Annen and Glenn Gronkowski. Mundine has a lot of work ahead of him if he wants to make the squad.
