One year after moving on from future Hall of Fame running back LeSean McCoy, it looks like the Buffalo Bills are ready to double down and let Frank Gore leave in free agency. Rookie sensation Devin Singletary proved himself an electrifying weapon at the running back position and is set to become the number one option there. But who’s going to share the load with ‘Motor’?

It’s too early to tell, but former rugby star Christian Wade is an intriguing option. The British running back came to Buffalo through the NFL International Player Pathway Program. In limited opportunities during 2020’s preseason, he left a lasting impression and showed potential as a big-play threat. Wade ran for a 65-yard touchdown on his first NFL touch, and almost did it again on his second touch, this time on a 48-yard reception.

It’s still a long-shot, but after spending the 2020 season on the team’s practice squad and learning from an all-time great in Frank Gore, it’ll be interesting to monitor the improvements in Wade’s game during the next training camp. For now, the path to a spot on the 53-man roster looks like it’s less crowded than a year ago, and if he can continue to show a knack for big plays in addition to more consistency with the basics, he could emerge as a nice option in 2021.

I wouldn’t bet on it, though. It’s never easy to adapt so fast to a new sport, especially at a such high level. Only time will tell; Wade is explosive, and this type of skill set complements Motor’s consistency. The Brit should have one more shot to achieve his dream.
