2020 NFL Mock Draft | Russell Brown reveals his first set of projections

It’s been a fun process so far for the 2020 NFL Draft but there’s still plenty of more work that needs to be done. There’s still quite a few cornerbacks that I need to watch and I’d like to get to some more linebackers but that will come with time. Now that the Super Bowl is done, and officially put a bow on the 100th season of the NFL, it’s time to start looking towards the 101st season of the NFL.

Much like I do every year after the Super Bowl, it’s time for my first mock draft for the 2020 NFL Draft. I don’t normally post mock trades (spoiler: there’s none here today) but through the process, if something happens or I really like an idea, I’ll post one or two in a new mock draft. For example, I do like the idea of the Saints moving up in the 2020 NFL Draft to grab a quarterback. That quarterback would be Jordan Love from Utah State. Don’t worry though, I’ll explain more at a later date. For now, I want each and every single one of you to get angry with me on Twitter because I didn’t have your favorite player go to your favorite team. Enjoy my first mock draft for the 2020 NFL Draft!

1. CINCINNATI BENGALS
(2-14)
JOE BURROW
QB // LSU // 6-4 // 216
How can it not be Joe Burrow? He’s the best quarterback in the draft and quite possibly, the best player in the draft. Despite having that label “1B” on my draft board, the Bengals get their new franchise quarterback.
2. WASHINGTON REDSKINS
(3-13)
CHASE YOUNG
DE // Ohio State // 6-5 // 265
Could the Redskins trade back on this pick? If they get the farm, sure. They can’t pass on Young, though. Ryan Kerrigan isn’t getting any younger (32-years-old in August) and missed the first game of his career this past year. Washington goes back to Ohio State for some more talent.
3. DETROIT LIONS
(3-12-1)
DERRICK BROWN
DT // Auburn // 6-5 // 318
Truly, the Lions should trade back regardless of what offer presents itself. By the time we get to April, defensive tackle could be their biggest need. Brown is the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in this class and he’d be a perfect fit in Patricia’s multiple front defense.
4. NEW YORK GIANTS
(4-12)
ANDREW THOMAS
OT // Georgia // 6-5 // 320
It’s Dave Gettleman so it’s got to be a dude in the trenches. Thomas is that dude and he fits a serious need for the Giants. Nate Solder is far from what he used to be and with how Thomas excels in the run game, it’s a big win for Saquon Barkley.
5. MIAMI DOLPHINS
(5-11)
TUA TAGOVAILOA
QB // Alabama // 6-1 // 218
It’ll take a trade up to get him but the Dolphins will pull the trigger and do it. They have tons of draft capital (six picks in the top 70) and need a new face of the franchise. Tua could be one of the more dynamic players in this class and the only question mark is his health.
6. LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
(5-11)
JUSTIN HERBERT
QB // Oregon // 6-6 // 227
Sigh, no more Philip Rivers with the Chargers. It seems like he is destined for retirement or to play in Florida. Chargers need a new quarterback and Herbert fits what they need with his athletic ability and velocity.
7. CAROLINA PANTHERS
(5-11)
ISAIAH SIMMONS
LB/UTIL // Clemson // 6-4 // 230
Nobody saw Luke Keuchly retiring but the Panthers need a smart and instinctive linebacker to try and fill the void. Simmons is the most versatile player in this draft and should be an instant impact player for a Panthers defense that will desperately need him.
8. ARIZONA CARDINALS
(5-10-1)
HENRY RUGGS III
WR // Alabama // 6-0 // 190
Larry Fitzgerald continues to play forever so maybe the Cardinals will draft an offensive tackle but once Ruggs lights up the combine, the Cardinals will fall in love with him. He’s got big play ability whenever he’s on the field and pairing him with Kyler Murray sounds like heaven on earth.
9. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
(6-10)
JEFF OKUDAH
CB // Ohio State // 6-1 // 200
The Lions make a lot of sense for Okudah but that’s a topic for a different day. For now, Okudah falls in the Jaguars lap and the man-corner will look to develop into a superstar for a franchise that traded Jalen Ramsey to the Rams during the season. They get their replacement.
10. CLEVELAND BROWNS
(6-10)
JEDRICK WILLS JR.
OT // Alabama // 6-5 // 320
Foot speed is all you need to know on Jedrick Wills. He’s quietly been one of the better players at Alabama over the last two seasons and he’ll slide in as a starting offensive tackle for the Browns. Primarily a right tackle but they could flirt with him on the left side to protect Baker Mayfield.
11. NEW YORK JETS
(7-9)
TRISTAN WIRFS
OT // Iowa // 6-5 // 322
This could be a great spot for the draft to fall off it’s wheels. 1.) It’s the Jets but 2.) Could a team like the Saints trade up for a QB? Anything is possible. For now, the Jets need to protect Sam Darnold. Wirfs needs some refinement with his footwork but he makes a ton of sense for the Jets.
12. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
(7-9)
CEEDEE LAMB
WR // Oklahoma // 6-2 // 195
By trading for Antonio Brown, we all thought the Raiders answered their prayers at the wide receiver position. It didn’t work out. This one will workout. They get my top ranked wide receiver who catches just about anything and everything. Vegas starts with a splash.
13. INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
(7-9)
JAVON KINLAW
DT // South Carolina // 6-5 // 315
Personally, I don’t think Jordan Love will be available for the Colts so they’ll settle for another player from the Senior Bowl. They’ve drafted 10 players from the Senior Bowl over the last three drafts and Kinlaw will be the 11th. He’d be a great fit for their interior defensive line and should provide an impact from day one.
14. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
(7-9)
AJ EPENESA
DE // Iowa // 6-5 // 280
Even if the Bucs re-sign Shaq Barrett, they’ll have to consider another edge rusher opposite of him. Epenesa has great size at 6-6 and 280 pounds. He’s coming off a career year with 14.5 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks. He should see similar production for this Bucs defense.
15. DENVER BRONCOS
(7-9)
JERRY JEUDY
WR // Alabama // 6-1 // 192
It certainly seems like the Broncos have something with Drew Lock. Keep in mind, Noah Fant, Phillip Lindsay and Courtland Sutton are all great around Lock, too. By adding Jeudy, the Broncos get a player with elite ability to separate and can make defenders miss in the open field. It makes too much sense.
16. ATLANTA FALCONS
(7-9)
K’LAVON CHAISSON
EDGE // LSU // 6-4 // 250
Despite having Vic Beasley return to some form of credibility, the Falcons still need another edge rusher. Chaisson has great ability to run the arc and bend to the quarterback. He should be able to generate pressure on a consistent basis for the Falcons.
17. DALLAS COWBOYS
(8-8)
GRANT DELPIT
SAF // LSU // 6-3 // 203
Delpit didn’t look like the same player in 2019 as he did during the 2018 season. However, he’s got first round talent and the Cowboys could use him regardless of having Byron Jones back or not. Delpit has unique range and has shown the ball skills needed to succeed.
18. MIAMI DOLPHINS
*from Pittsburgh (8-8)
MEKHI BECTON
OT // Louisville // 6-7 // 369
After moving on from Laremy Tunsil, it’s clear the Dolphins were going to be in need for an offensive tackle. Becton is a perfect fit for them. He’s got heavy hands and moves really well for a player of his size (6’7″ and 360 pounds). Miami needs help on their offensive line and Becton could help in a very big way.
19. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS
*from Chicago (8-8)
XAVIER MCKINNEY
SAF // Alabama // 6-1 // 200
Even though the Raiders have Jonathan Abram, they could still use another safety in their defense. Abram only played one game and is better suited in the box. McKinney has good range and comes downhill well and would provide an upgrade over players like Lamarcus Joyner and Erik Harris.
20. JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
*from LA Rams (8-8)
TEE HIGGINS
WR // Clemson // 6-4 // 210
The development of D.J. Chark has been great for the Jags but they need another weapon for Gardner Minshew. Higgins is a big bodied receiver with great body control who can high-point the football with a big catch radius. He’d help immediately.
21. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES
(9-7)
KRISTIAN FULTON
CB // LSU // 6-0 // 200
I was on the fence for the Eagles to draft a cornerback or a linebacker but ultimately, I went with a defensive back. Fulton is the highest ranked player left on my board with great patience and is physical in man coverage. His ceiling might not be as high as Okudah but this is a steal at this point in the draft for the 18th ranked pass defense last season (per NFL stats).
22. BUFFALO BILLS
(10-6)
YETUR GROSS-MATOS
DE // Penn State // 6-5 // 265
Jerry Hughes can’t play forever and Trent Murphy could be a cap casualty as the Bills prepare to pay players such as Dion Dawkins, Tre White and Josh Allen. Gross-Matos has good length and when he puts it together, he’s got a nice blend of speed-to-power.
23. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
(12-4)
JOSH JONES
OT // Houston // 6-5 // 311
Tom Brady isn’t leaving, right? The Patriots could move on from their left guard Joe Thuney this off-season. If so, it would make sense to plug Isaiah Wynn at guard and the Patriots could put Josh Jones at left tackle. Jones moves well in space and has really good length for the position. He had 635 snaps at left tackle last season (per PFF) and he’s got all the tools to develop into a solid starting offensive tackle at the next level.
24. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
(13-3)
JORDAN LOVE
QB // Utah State // 6-3 // 223
If I did a trade in this mock draft, it would be the Saints moving up and snagging Jordan Love. He’d be a perfect fit with Sean Payton and this offense. He’s got such a natural release and throwing motion. He’ll need to continue on making better decisions in the middle of the field but he should be able to reach his potential with the Saints.
25. MINNESOTA VIKINGS
(10-6)
NEVILLE GALLIMORE
DT // Oklahoma
It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Vikings take a cornerback here but they’ve needed an interior defensive lineman for awhile and Gallimore is a perfect fit. He’s a versatile defensive tackle that can play anywhere. He generates pressure with consistent swim moves and would be a great addition on this Vikings defense.
26. MIAMI DOLPHINS
*from Houston (10-6)
JULIAN OKWARA
DE // Notre Dame // 6-4 // 248
The Dolphins moved on from Robert Quinn but haven’t seen the development from Charles Harris to justify taking another position other than an edge rusher. Okwara has great length and would develop nicely under Brian Flores as he’ll help him become more consistent with his hands and some type of counter move.
27. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
(11-5)
AUSTIN JACKSON
OT // USC // 6-6 // 310
Every year I slot an offensive lineman to the Seahawks and they never do it. No different this year. Duane Brown can’t play forever and is already 34 years old. Jackson has good size at 6-6 and 310 pounds. He’s got a smooth kick slide and his hand placement is relatively consistent.
28. BALTIMORE RAVENS
(14-2)
KENNETH MURRAY
LB // Oklahoma // 6-2 // 243
Depending on what happens with Matt Judon, the Ravens could target an edge rusher. However, they need help inside at linebacker and Murray could be an instant plug-and-play guy for them. He’s got really good range with an athletic build. He leaves his feet quite a bit when tackling but would develop nicely in Baltimore.
29. TENNESSEE TITANS
(9-7)
TREVON DIGGS
CB // Alabama // 6-2 // 207
If Derrick Henry ends up signing elsewhere, the Titans could have their pick at running back. Logan Ryan is set to become a free-agent and there will be a need at cornerback if he hits the market. Titans snag my top ranked cornerback on the board in Diggs who excels in zone coverage with good knowledge and length (6’2″ 200 pounds).
30. GREEN BAY PACKERS
(13-3)
VAN JEFFERSON
WR // Florida // 6-2 // 197
No doubt, the Packers biggest weakness this year was not having another wide receiver to play opposite of Davante Adams. Don’t get me wrong, Allen Lazard has developed nicely but Van Jefferson would be an instant impact receiver in the slot. He’s got great footwork and would win in the middle of the field and short areas to help bring a title to Green Bay during the window of what’s left of Aaron Rodgers career.
31. SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
(13-3)
CJ HENDERSON
CB // Florida // 6-1 // 202
The 49ers have a need at cornerback and that’s regardless of the expiring contract of Richard Sherman. Henderson has good footwork and looks like a natural athlete with good ball skills to win at the next level.
32. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
(12-4)
TYLER BIADASZ
C // Wisconsin // 6-3 // 321
Some people will say he had a bad year but from the games I watched, I see a solid interior offensive lineman in Biadasz. He anchors late and tends to lose ground like Garrett Bradbury (first round pick in 2019) but his hand placement is consistent and he operates real nicely in space.
